Striders In Toowoomba

P1040183

For the second year a Striders team headed up the range to Toowoomba to participate in the Toowoomba Road Runners 10km, Half and Marathon. Last year was a successful year with me taking out the marathon, and the pressure was on to retain the title. We also had a few contenders for the 10km and Half race amongst our women. (more…)

Toowoomba Weekend Away

IMG_2528_edited-1

Strider takes out the Towoomba Marathon in 2008

Last year we had a very successful weekend away in Toowoomba competing in the 10km, Half and Marathon, which was won by one of our own Striders (Stan).Read reports here, here, and here.

This year we plan to go back up for another weekend of run fun.  We leave on Saturday at lunchtime, drive up the range, check into a caravan park where the guys and girls have their own cabins.  On Saturday night we all go out of for a pasta at an excellent Italian place, and then get ready for a big morning.

After the race and the prizegiving we all retire to Sizzler for a big guilt free feed before returning reluctantly down the range and home to nurse our gloriously wasted bodies.  If you are intending on coming please tell Gabriel (evening runners), or Stan (morning runners).  We will be booking cabins soon so need numbers.

The Course

The race is organised by Toowoomba Road Runners which is an excellent club who are very experienced in putting on events. The course is quite tough, a 10.5km loop which has a few turns and twists and one or two inclines.  It’s a good honest run that keeps you on your toes and there’s no help from large crowds or flat courses here!  If you can run this coruse, you’ll do well at the major races which are a lot flatter.

It’s a great weekend away, and an excellent social time.

Saturday Morning Sessions

Our morning and evening weekday runners are now combining on a Saturday morning to do some LSD trips (long slow distance!).  You have a 5:00am option and a 5:30am option.  The 5:00am option kicks off from the Lilley Road Park, Cnr Lilley Rd & Sanderling Drive, Warner.  These runners then run to Maccas Warner, where the 5:30am runners join the bus and head off towards Mc Gavin’s View.  The runs start at about 12km and can go up to 25-30km (depending on how many runners are training for a marathon).

Your running standard needs to be intermediate at least, so that you don’t get left way behind.  Typically, this session is for regular runners who are fit and need to do some LSD training for forthcoming races.  To kick off at 5:00am call Stan on 0402019050 and to kick off at 5:30am speak to Gabriel on 3325 4037.

5:00am runners can park at Lilley Road Park (on the corner with Sanderling Drive), and 5:30am runners can park at Maccas and enjoy breakfast there afterwards if they want. No cost, all runners run at their own risk.  There are water and toilet stops on the routes we take.  Wear bright or white clothing, invest in proper running apparel so that you don’t drown in your own sweat.  Those going on the longer runs should bring along some Gels and a waterbottle.

Striders Hit The Bridge

Plenty of Striders joined over 45 000 other runners and walkers to complete the ever popular Bridge 2 Brisbane on Sunday. Some took it seriously and others took it as an opportunity to have fun.  Mary and Jo decided to do a ‘Nun’s On The Run’ impression, and offered many other runners the option of a ‘blessing on the run’, including Premier Anna Bligh who declined their generous offer.

Bridge 2 Brisbane Preview

Striders will be out in force on Sunday in the most popular run on the Queensland calendar – the Bridge to Brisbane.  Two of our runners, Mary and Jo will be running as pregnant nuns! Most others will be dressed in less salubrious gear, namely the Striders kit.

Four Striders competed in last weeks Brisbane Marathon Festival, Tony Banfield running the marathon, Gabriel Petrie, Karen Brown and Jenny Cawood competing in the Half.  All the best to our runners on the weekend, have fun and enjoy the view from the Bridge!

Striders Duo In 50km Epic

Lisa Maj & Jo-ann Filmalter all smiles after a 50km epic.

Lisa Maj & Jo-ann Filmalter all smiles after a 50km epic.

Lisa Maj and Jo-ann Filmalter completed the 50km Walk 4 Charity Epic on Saturday, from Mitchelton to Scarborough.  The duo came in 6th and 7th of 120 participants. Jo writes:

On Saturday the 1st August 2009, Lisa & I set off on a 5okm charity walk: “Go the Extra Mile” – which is an endurance walking event designed to raise money for Gospel For Asia’s work amongst the neediest children of India – the “untouchables” – Dalits.

The walk started at Teralba Park in Michelton and finished at Owens Park in Scarborough. The morning started out really cold but turned into the most perfect day. The whole route was through parklands and beachfront, it was really beautiful. We ran the first 25km and walked most of the second 25km. The volunteers and marshalls were wonderful along the route and we have never been offered so many lollies! We thoroughly enjoyed our day and crossed the finish line in 7 hours 50 mins in 6th & 7th place out of a field of 122 starters. We look forward to tackling this event again next year!

Congratulations to both.  Jo is backing up this weekend in Sydney at the City 2 Surf and will be returning to Sydney for the SMH Half Marathon later in the year.
