And the Race is on…. Race Number One of the Club Championship- Mount Glorious

A small contingent of Striders competed in the first race of the 2017 club championship calendar. Corne Grotius, Ryan Moore, Stan Fetting and I were the keen few to take on this rather brutal 22k trail run. I’ve completed the 18k Pinnacles trail run a few times and assumed this was only 4k longer, it couldn’t be much harder. Hmmm I was a little deluded. If you’ve seen the elevation of this course on strava you’ll know what I mean.

The race starts at White Cedar picnic ground about a 20 min drive past the summit of Mt Glorious and finishes opposite the Maiala picnic ground on Mt Glorious.

2016/17 Club Championship Race Calendar

7 November 2016 – 30 September 2017

The Annual Awards Presentation event  at the end of each running year sees the recognition of the achievement of club members who have raced at various local running events.

Each year there are a number of trophies presented as follows:

10k – fastest female and fastest female time

Half marathon – fastest female and fastest male time

Marathon – fastest female and fastest male time

Club Champion – (based on points accumulated over the year for placing in the designated Club Championship events listed below)

This past year we have welcomed lots of new members to our Club, and it would be fantastic to see some renewed enthusiasm towards our Club Championship events.  These events follow along the training pathway toward the Gold Coast Marathon weekend which for many is the target event for the year.  Our coaches have chosen these events carefully to make sure they fit into the programme for “ultimate success”!  (true story….it works 🙂


  1. Distance category awards criteria

– Awards to the quickest male and female 10km, 21km and 42km race anywhere

(IE. not limited to the Club Championship points events listed below)

  1. Club Champs criteria

– The format is as follows:

  1. There are 12 races to choose from
  2. 5 of the 12 will count towards your club champs points tally
  3. 10 points for a distance category win with points reducing by 2 for each subsequent placing (e.g. first male and female in the same event earn the same points)


  1. You need to be a financial member of South Pine Striders at the time of the event for the points to count.
  2. The 12 races is not to encourage you to do all 12 but rather provide options and time for recovery. Choose wisely.
  3. No complaints will be entertained.
  4. You need to run in your own registered number.
  5. You should run in Striders club kit to run faster.
  6. Your safety and health and that of other competitors is of primary importance.

Wild Horse at Night

Trails… in the dark…. Yvonne and Jason took on the challenge of Wild Horse at Night last weekend and for anyone considering it, heres a bit of an insight.

Saturday 18th June at 6pm a whole bunch of crazy people lined up to run the Wild Horse @ night events put on by Run Qld. There were three race distances run, 10k, 16k and 25k. I believe only two Striders ran, Jason Manktelow in the 10k event & myself in the 25k.

The conditions were much tougher than I’d anticipated. The terrain was continually changing. There were long sections of soft sand, patches of slippery mud, lots of large deep puddles, sections of very uneven rocky track and generally lots of rough uneven surface. 100% concentration on where you placed your feet was essential. Remember this is also in the dark, no moon, no light other than the lamp on your head which seemed blindingly bright in my living room!

The 25k event started first, followed 10 min later by the 16k runners & another 10 mins later the 10k runners. I started near the front group and managed to stay near the lead for the whole race. Although for most of the race it seemed I was out in the dark in the forest by myself. No sign of anyone in front or behind me. The only clue I’m going the right way the reflectors hanging from tree branches every 200m or so. It’s not a race for the faint-hearted or those scared of the dark…like me. It was a huge incentive for me to push hard & get back to the finish as quickly as possible. Needless to say I was very happy when I started to catch up with the last of the 16k runners in the last few kilometers of the race and then approach the finish.

Jason ran an incredible race finishing in 43:19 and placing 2nd overall & 1st in his category.

I was very happy with my 12th place overall and 5th female in 2:14:39.



Mt Mee Classic

On Sunday 10 April, I ran in the 19k event as part of the Mt Meet Classic. I have moved out to Daybook late last year so thought I had better run my ‘local’ race.  It was a tough race, with a lot more walking that I had anticipated.  The first 10k was enjoyable, even though it was up and down.  But the final 9k felt like a continuous climb to the finish, with the sun blaring down on us.

One of my running buddies ran the 44k – her first marathon, first ultra-marathon and first trail race all in one.  It was great to see her out on the course and then cheer her across the finish line.

Now time to consult the race calendar and work out whats next…….
