Striders 10km Championships Report

The Striders 10km Run & Walk Championships were held this weekend at the Brisbane Marathon Festival and produced a few sensations.

The Female 10km run promised to be an open race, with at least second and third place keenly contested. Julie Turner took out the Gold medal with an impressive time of 42:50*, over a minute faster than her predicted time.

Julie was ahead of the pace throughout the race but managed to sustain herself over the run to finish well under her target time. Julie is on her way back to her PB’s from younger years and the rest of Striders will need to beware, especially the faster blokes!

Brianna Moss also ran an impressive race to collect silver ahead of Jess Flintoff, who pulled out another great performance after last year’s efforts. Brianna was one of 5 Moss family members to compete on the day, and not the only one to take home some bling.

The Man’s 10km run proved to be a procession with Steve Meharg running a creditable first effort at 10km and managing to do it in sub 40, clocking a time of 39:18.

Greg Hall had Steve in his sights but couldn’t hold on to his pace and finished second in 42:13. As always Greg put in a hard effort all the way to the finish line.

Sensation of the day was Jackson Moss, who stormed home in front of his Dad Ian and brother Nathan to take Bronze in 46:51.

The 10km Walk has a small field, but you’ve got to be in it to win it! Brian Meharg strode home in an amazing time of 1hr10, followed by John Redsell and Colleen Moss. The result of the race was thrown into confusion with claims of running leveled at some walkers but common sense prevailed and the medal ceremony went ahead without protest.

Congratulations to all Striders who fronted up for a great day to christen our new Club Marquee. Check out all the pictures in our slide show.
