Running Race Roundup: Brisbane, XC Nationals, Lakes College, Sunny Coast

August 27, 2012

Over the last couple of weeks there have been some great race results for Striders in a number of races including two junior members competing in the Australian Cross Country Championships in Adelaide. Here’s some edited highlights: Brisbane Running Festival (5 August)

This year this race managed to get its race shirts correct and is no longer a “running restival”. This years start (thanks to a new government) took the route through a few CBD streets before a climb up to the Bridge and then down onto the Southbank pathways. Yvonne Baylis backed up from the Gold Coast with a 44:36 minute, 4th in category 10km on a tough XC like course, and Stan Fetting backed up from Comrades in South Africa with a 38:09 min and 2 in category. Jennifer McGuiness is our oldest female club member and still taking on huge challenges and she finally achieved a long time goal of the Half in under 3 hours so congrats to her.

Lakes College Fun Run (19 August)
Julie Turner won the Lakes College 10km continuing her impressive year, her son Harrison was also a winner on the day taking out the 2km.

Australian Cross Country Championships – Adelaide (25 August)

This weekend Dean Cane and Chloe Beer competed in the XC Nationals in Adelaide, Dean took out 4th place and Chloe 17th.  Both are Striders Juniors and have a sensational future. Both can be hugely proud of an amazing achievement this weekend.

Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival (26 August)

This weekend at the inaugural Sunshine Coast Marathon Nicole Van Gurp nailed an excellent 3:28:38, 3rd in category and 11th female overall. It wasn’t necessarily an easy course with a big climb to start with and then lots of twists and turns on a 4-lap course. Stan Fetting took out in 1st in category with a new Half PB of 1:22:20, backing up from Comrades and training for the Toowoomba Marathon. Julie Turner was also category winner and 7th female overall in the10km, Jenny Cawood 4th in Half category. Peter Savoupoulos did his first full marathon at the sunny coast in excellent time of 3.53.45. There was great support from Banfield’s and a very vocal trademark Jerrod.  All in all a great bunch of Striders up for the weekend & the day: Karen & Scotty Brown, Jane Schmidhauser, Sandy Scott, Phil Prisk, Tim Carr, Yvonne Baylis, Zara Di Bella & Brent Kriel. (Let me know if I’ve unintentionally left anyone out please) Mark this event on your annual calendar!
