A strong contingent of Striders headed out to Toowoomba for this weekend’s XCell Roofing Toowoomba Marathon and other distances. The race featured a new course and considerable improvements to runner safety. The new course took runners out into the farm areas beyond the University and runners got some great views and scenery but paid the price with some new hills. Striders Abi Griffin took out the female marathon title (3:32) and club president Stan Fetting won his second marathon title in Toowoomba (2:57). Over the last couple of weeks there have been some great race results for Striders in a number of races including two junior members competing in the Australian Cross Country Championships in Adelaide. The old maxim that ‘times don’t win races, racers win races’ was proven again this week at the Olympics where we saw some high profile meltdowns. Emily Seebohm did the nation proud but felt she had failed in missing out on a gold medal, and James Magnussen didn’t fire as expected in the 4X100m freestyle relay final. Channel 9 helped make matters worse by conducting some train wreck interviews at a time when both athletes needed some space to process their emotions and thoughts so soon after the end of the race (and catch their breath). Most of us who race have had our dog days, when things just don’t go right, and many would have sympathised with James and Emily. Our new identity as fully independent club was cemented last night. At our meeting the inaugural leadership team of South Pine Striders were voted in. We have a team of eight which includes three officers and five members of the management team. We also filled a number of other club roles on what was a very productive night.
