Bribie Island Tri Series – 6 Dec 2009

Abi participated in the Individual Long Course Bribie Island Triathlon event held on Sunday, 6 December. As you can see by her time and finishing position all that effort that Abi has put in during her training sessions is paying off and she is able to proudly boast of this result, although she probably won’t. So we will on her behalf by letting all and sundry know of this achievement. Well done Abi! Photo’s of Abi finishing the run leg can be found at the website and the photos are referenced LEE_1263-2009bribietrir2 and LEE_1264-2009bribietrir2

To all those of you who participated as well and have been missed in this summary….my apologies. Please advise the club coordinator of this error and it will be rectified. It’s not about boasting. It’s about pride and celebration of a successful and enjoyable effort. Continue reading “Bribie Island Tri Series – 6 Dec 2009”

Kurrawa to Duranbah 13 Dec 2009

What an enjoyable event! I had to compete for a cab with the late night or early morning youth out clubbing and returning to wherever at 4:30am on a Sunday morning! There were a total of 190 Runners running either the solo 25km, relay 25km x 2 or solo 50km and the starting ‘pistol’ comprising of an ‘Ok, go’. The race is from Broadbeach to Danger Point Coolangatta. There are no km marker boards, you know you’ve done 25km’s when you get to the turning point for the 50km event.

I met some interesting people. One 67 year old who ran 25km’s in 2hrs and is apparently a bit of a legend as far as running goes, Goes by the name of the ‘Sylva Fox’. Julie and Wendy, Margaret of Toowoomba Road Runners asked after you but was overjoyed that neither of you were present. Continue reading “Kurrawa to Duranbah 13 Dec 2009”

Striders At MousDash

Abi & Karen - Mo Sista's

Tony Banfield took on the mighty Mt Coottha recently in the MousDash, here’s how it went:

It was a beautiful morning on Mt Coo’tha. I met up with Karen and Abi and a friend of mine from work. We had a chat and a catch up and got down to business. BTW, Karen and Abi were both sporting very respectable Mo’s as Mo Sistas, and they were’nt even fake! Kidding!

Started run at just past 7am and next thing found Karen up ahead some 200m up the hill. We asked her where Abi was and she said she had charged ahead. So off I went in search of Abi. Found her some 200m further ahead. Stayed and chatted for awhile and then I headed off. This was all on the initial hill of about 2.5 – 3 km long – depends who you ask. Run was up and down from there on in with a good descent lasting about 3 – 4 kms where I think we all took a crash course in racing downhill. I know I did. Some must do it naturally, hey Abi & Karen? Makes me sick!

Thanks to Photo Events for excellent pics.

Striders Perform At Gold Coast Marathon

GCM09M
Mary Jackson, Pamela Murch & Stan Fetting after the Gold Coast Marathon.

A large contingent of Striders travelled to the Gold Coast Marathon this weekend to contest 3 distances: 10km, Half and Marathon.  We had a number of people doing their first Half, including the incredible Tommy Donnet, who came in at 1hr43min taking out 5th place in his category, Male 60-65.  Congratulations Tommy, you continue to astound us all!  Another great debut was Pamela Murch in in the marathon.  Fresh from Wales and a recent newcomer to Striders morning and evening sessions, Pamela overcame injury and posted an amazing 3:46. Pamela’s beaming smile almost outdid the sunshine and she’s probably still smiling today.  It’s great to see someone do so well after so much hard work and enjoy the benefits so visibly!

Karen Brown nailed a 1:42 Half, must be that new 2XU outfit she was sporting!

Emily Glegg contested the 10km and took out 8th place in her category with a 49:01. Others to debut at the Half were Jess Flintoff with an awesome 1:51 and Jo Filmalter who came in under her goal of 2hrs at 1:57.  Well done girls!

Stan just missed out on a sub 3 marathon with 3:00:23 after struggling with a calf injury from 25km, and Jenny Cawood continued her remarkable run with a 3:44 marathon.  Mary paced Jo C through her first marathon with a 4:47.  Mary rarely races for herself and always helps others out, a true clubster and coach!

I have the results of those who I know, and will add more as I become aware of them.  Here’s the list so far, (all showing chip times and not gun times) and some more pics: Continue reading “Striders Perform At Gold Coast Marathon”

Active Stride 6km Trail Run Race Report

julie_prizeA group of 5 Striders entered the Active Stride 6km Trail Run which was part of the In 2 Adventure Dirtfest, featuring MTB racing, of road triathlon and trail running in the beautiful and rugged Slickers property deep in Kurwongbah, one of Brisbane hidden jewels.  Julie Turner, Wendy Clark and Jo-anne Filmalter contested the women’s race whilst young buck Greg Hall renewed his ongoing battle with sly old fox Stan Fetting in the men’s race.

The field wasn’t too big but the sight of legendary runner Don Wallace [4th in this weekend’s Six Foot Track] and top marathon female champion Helen Stanton made us all nervous.  The field started slowly and the race leaders took the first km easy until the first climb at the back of the dam.  The field spread out after that with only a few runners changing placeat the pointy end of the race.   ‘Greg Dog’ sat right behind the Old Fox breathing down his neck until just before the 4km mark when he drew level and passed.  This didn’t last too long as the blazing late afternoon sun took its toll on the young upstart and the old fox pulled away.  Not too far back Julie Turner was putting in a determined effort and ran a fast race.  Stan got an unexpected bonus when the runner in front of him in 4th place planted his right foot in a mud crossing and left without his trainer whcih he then had to dig out.  Stan ran over the line in 4th behind Helen Stanton. Greg followed in 6th position.  Julie took out second female and 8th overall.  Wendy crossed in 13th and Jo-anne in 24th. Check out the full results below [click to enlarge]. Mooloolaba Triathlon Challenge

triA growing number of Striders have taken on the challenge of racing each other at the 2009 Mooloolaba Tri.  Most of the entrants from Striders have strengths in at least one of the disciplines and also weaknesses in at least one if not two!

It is a great way of cross training and we plan on having our marquee in the finishing area and making a great weekend of it.  If we can get enough orders we are currently looking at putting together a Striders cycling kit in the same style as our running kit.

To find out more and book your place go the the Mooloolaba Tri website.
