Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge 2012

Ouch or Eina! Depending on your country of origin. I’d done this event in the previous two years with the first year being a 29 hour effort and only 3 of the 4 team members making it (a fail in other words and the t-shirt is for gardening only) and then last year being a 23 hour effort but with all 4 team members crossing the line. Super feeling. This year I had decided that it was unfair to commit to a team as a result of the uncertainty of life after the Comrades as I would have liked to have bettered the 23 hour and probably aimed for under 20 hours. Striders At Gold Coast Marathon 2012

A good bunch of Striders headed down to the premier running event in SE Queensland this weekend for the Gold Coast Marathon Festival.  Julie Turner kicked off the weekend in style with a blistering 38:51 in the Southern Cross University 10km.  Julie had a seeded start after taking out her age group at the Noosa 10km and she used it to good effect.  In a very competitive field she placed 3rd in her category and of course posted another consistently fast time. On Sunday we had a number of Half and Marathon debutantes who all did remarkably well on what turned out to be a hot day for the marathoners. Continue reading “Striders At Gold Coast Marathon 2012”

Gold Coast Marathon Top Ten Taper Tips

The premier running event of SE Queensland is only a week away and final training preparation us underway.  There’s not much you can do to make yourself faster right now, but there are things you can do to make yourself slower and have a really bad day.  Here’s my top taper tips: Continue reading “Gold Coast Marathon Top Ten Taper Tips”

Indiana’s Run – Comrades Marathon 2012

The odds seemed stacked against me getting to the 2012 Comrades Marathon. Running Comrades is easy for me, getting permission from your wife to travel to South Africa and run it is the hard bit. Having pulled off that miracle I registered only to be diagnosed with a serious tear of my peroneal tendon (ankle). I remember clearly having an argument with my doctor in December 2011. He said “4 months off”, I said “but I’m going to Comrades”, he said “4 months”, and so the square off continued. My physio gave me hope, “2 and a half months” he said. That’s what I settled on and in early February I completed my first hour long run, 2 months behind Comrades schedule. I was out of shape and overweight after nearly 3 months of no training. Just what shape I would be in on race day was anyone’s guess. Continue reading “Indiana’s Run – Comrades Marathon 2012”

Striders Shine In The Noosa Sun

The Noosa Winter Festival was held in ideal conditions with a fresh start followed by golden sunshine.  The Striders contingent shone as well showing the fruit of lots of hard training since the start of the year and promising more to come at the Gold Coast on the first weekend of July.  There were a swag of PB’s and some inspirational stories with first timers and comebacks from surgery. etc. Continue reading “Striders Shine In The Noosa Sun”

Twilight Half Marathon Training Plan

Your club coaches for morning and evening have a full plan including intervals & hills worked out for beginner, intermediate and advanced runners leading up to the Twilight Half Marathon on Sunday night March 18.  The plan includes a 5km and 10km time trial which is ESSENTIAL so that we can work out your pacing for the Half. The 10km time trial will be run by Striders out at Sandgate on a Saturday night to help acclimatise you to night running (which is VERY different). Striders Club Championship Races for 2012

Each year we have a Cub Championship competition based on points accumulated in our 8 listed club runs.  These 8 runs have been chosen across a number of distances and race types. First place in a distance category gets the winner 10 points, second place 8, and so forth. Last year’s inaugural winner was Stan Fetting and in 2012 the challenge is out to topple Stan from the championship.  Women dominated the leaderboard last year: Continue reading “Striders Club Championship Races for 2012”

Striders Annual Awards Report

A record 86 people joined our annual night of nights held for the first time on Saturday November 5, 2011. Proceedings started with finger foods and live musician Simon Kennedy who proved to be a big hit all night with the punters. After main course our awards were announced. Gabriel Petrie’s contribution as a founding member was recognised with a presentation. He was given ‘Zinn & the art of bycycle maintenance’ to mark his transition from running to bike riding which he now excels at. Continue reading “Striders Annual Awards Report”

Striders Simmer in Toowoomba

A good number of Striders gathered at the Toowoomba Golf Club on Saturday night for a big carbo loading session followed by some late evening ice cream runs and more than a few packets of chocolate and snakes. It was great to have Dino along with his beautiful family. Paul Dack and Jerrod failed to give Stan proper navigational support and they all ended up at the Walloon Saloon where there was one particular bearded lady who made us get out of town quick smart.
