Toowoomba Race Preview

9 Striders will be heading up to Toowoomba this weekend to contest various distances on Sunday at the St George Bank Marathon [10km, Half, Marathon].

Stan and Mary will tackle the marathon, Greg and Gavin will take on the Half, and Julie, Wendy and Emily, Gabriel and Michael will take on the 10km.  Emily will be running her first ever 10km race, and she has been working hard in training.  Running is her third sport but she has been learning a lot and putting in a big effort on the hill sessions during winter.

Julie and Wendy will have another close contest, with not a lot seperating them.  They will be looking to crack the 42 minute barrier. Stan has put in a big effort to get back to standard after a long post-Comrades lay off but a late bout of bronchitis has added some doubt to his bid to a crack a sub 3 on the tough course.  Being a big sook doesn’t help.

The team heads up on Saturday, and they will enjoy a carbo loading session at an Italian restraunt in town before heading for an early bed.

More reasons to run

News reports today carry bad news for Australia’s twentysomethings:

THE health of the average 20-something Australian has slipped steadily in the past two decades, according to a report showing a fatter, more depressed young population.

A leading population health expert has challenged the official government view that young people today are much healthier than previous generations.

Team Members Needed for Endeavour 500 Challenge

The Endeavour 500 Summer Challenge is a team fund-raising epic held on November 21-23rd.  A team of between 18-22 runners take it in turns to run 500km in legs starting on Friday morning 4:30am in Beenleigh and work its way through Warwick, Toowoomba and eventually ending in Gatton.

Striders are looking to put a team in to this epic race.  It will be a great weekend.  Lots of hard work but lots of cameraderie between runners and a great sense of achievement.  We will be helping to support the valuable work of the Endeavour Foundation.

Our team bid coordinator is Wendy Clark.  The logistics will involve a bus, a ute and a support car so we do need some non-runners, injured runners, or runners who would like to be involved but not run.

Please check out the links and then let us know if you are interested.  Use the contact form to register your interest.

Bridge to Brisbane

Bridge to Brisbane is coming up soon on September 7th.  If you need  training advice make sure you speak to Stan, Gabriel or Mary.  Unfortunately we cannot take our club tent there, but we will nominate a gathering point closer to the time for post race celebration.  The bus to take you from the RNA showgrounds to the start is already sold out so if you are planning on attending the event be sure to let Gabriel know so we can discuss transport options to get you to the start line with adequate preparation time.
