Bribie Island Tri Series – 6 Dec 2009

Abi participated in the Individual Long Course Bribie Island Triathlon event held on Sunday, 6 December. As you can see by her time and finishing position all that effort that Abi has put in during her training sessions is paying off and she is able to proudly boast of this result, although she probably won’t. So we will on her behalf by letting all and sundry know of this achievement. Well done Abi! Striders At MousDash

Abi & Karen - Mo Sista's

Tony Banfield took on the mighty Mt Coottha recently in the MousDash, here’s how it went:

It was a beautiful morning on Mt Coo’tha. I met up with Karen and Abi and a friend of mine from work. We had a chat and a catch up and got down to business. BTW, Karen and Abi were both sporting very respectable Mo’s as Mo Sistas, and they were’nt even fake! Kidding!

Started run at just past 7am and next thing found Karen up ahead some 200m up the hill. We asked her where Abi was and she said she had charged ahead. So off I went in search of Abi. Found her some 200m further ahead. Stayed and chatted for awhile and then I headed off. This was all on the initial hill of about 2.5 – 3 km long – depends who you ask. Run was up and down from there on in with a good descent lasting about 3 – 4 kms where I think we all took a crash course in racing downhill. I know I did. Some must do it naturally, hey Abi & Karen? Makes me sick!

Striders Duo In 50km Epic

Lisa Maj and Jo-ann Filmalter completed the 50km Walk 4 Charity Epic on Saturday, from Mitchelton to Scarborough.  The duo came in 6th and 7th of 120 participants. Jo writes:

On Saturday the 1st August 2009, Lisa & I set off on a 5okm charity walk: “Go the Extra Mile” – which is an endurance walking event designed to raise money for Gospel For Asia’s work amongst the neediest children of India – the “untouchables” – Dalits. 

The walk started at Teralba Park in Michelton and finished at Owens Park in Scarborough. The morning started out really cold but turned into the most perfect day. The whole route was through parklands and beachfront, it was really beautiful. We ran the first 25km and walked most of the second 25km. The volunteers and marshalls were wonderful along the route and we have never been offered so many lollies! We thoroughly enjoyed our day and crossed the finish line in 7 hours 50 mins in 6th & 7th place out of a field of 122 starters. We look forward to tackling this event again next year!

Congratulations to both.  Jo is backing up this weekend in Sydney at the City 2 Surf and will be returning to Sydney for the SMH Half Marathon later in the year.

Guess Who Is Also A Runner?

We in Queensland like to think that we’ve got one up on the other States in Australia because our Premier Anna Bligh is a runner.  She trains with the Pat Carrol Training Group and competes at the main events.  She did the 10km at the Gold Coast marathon last weekend.

There are a few other pollies who run, but most of them tend to be males.

The latest USA version of Runners World features Sarah Palin, who is also a fellow runner.  She looks the part, and I’m sure she’s an inspiration for plenty of women (except Democrat voters!).

After announcing her resingation as Governor of Alaska she will no doubt have plenty mroe time to train.  Runners in Alaska must be a hardy bunch with such cold temperatures!

Striders Perform At Gold Coast Marathon

Mary Jackson, Pamela Murch & Stan Fetting after the Gold Coast Marathon.

A large contingent of Striders travelled to the Gold Coast Marathon this weekend to contest 3 distances: 10km, Half and Marathon.  We had a number of people doing their first Half, including the incredible Tommy Donnet, who came in at 1hr43min taking out 5th place in his category, Male 60-65.  Congratulations Tommy, you continue to astound us all!  Another great debut was Pamela Murch in in the marathon.  Fresh from Wales and a recent newcomer to Striders morning and evening sessions, Pamela overcame injury and posted an amazing 3:46. Pamela’s beaming smile almost outdid the sunshine and she’s probably still smiling today.  It’s great to see someone do so well after so much hard work and enjoy the benefits so visibly!

Karen Brown nailed a 1:42 Half, must be that new 2XU outfit she was sporting!

Emily Glegg contested the 10km and took out 8th place in her category with a 49:01. Others to debut at the Half were Jess Flintoff with an awesome 1:51 and Jo Filmalter who came in under her goal of 2hrs at 1:57.  Well done girls!

Stan just missed out on a sub 3 marathon with 3:00:23 after struggling with a calf injury from 25km, and Jenny Cawood continued her remarkable run with a 3:44 marathon.  Mary paced Jo C through her first marathon with a 4:47.  Mary rarely races for herself and always helps others out, a true clubster and coach!

Getting Your Pace Right At Gold Coast

With only days to go you should by now  have an idea of what time you are capable of running, and then working out what pace that is per/km. Using the km markers, you must stick to your pace and no faster. You can go faster over the last 3km’s of the 10km if you are capable, and in the Half once you have passed 17km you can think about getting faster. If you have a 3km or 5km [even better] time trial time, you can work off that. You will not be too much better than predicted, so don’t get any flash ideas.

Gold Coast Marathon – Final Preparations

The Big Green Striders Marquee will be at the Gold Coast Marathon  when you arrive.  Plan on staying  to have lunch with your fellow Striders after the race.  There are plenty of eateries nearby. The marquee will be put up on Saturday lunch-time.

SportAthletesDoomben: Quite a few Striders were busy at the recent Doomben Half Marathon.  Jo Filmalter debuted in her first ever Half, and also doing the 21.1km were Lisa May, Karen Brown and Jenny Cawood.  Tom Donnet won his age group in the 10km, and new Strider Jerrod Smith nailed the 10km as well.

24 Hour Triathlon, Kawana Waters: Mary Jackson came 5th overall and was second placed female in the gruelling and crazy and cold 24hr belter up at Kawana on the weekend supported by husband Brett and various other unruly Striders in the early hours of the morning.  Crazy, but impressive.  well done!
