Striders Win Male And Female Marathon Titles In Toowoomba

A strong contingent of Striders headed out to Toowoomba for this weekend’s XCell Roofing Toowoomba Marathon and other distances. The race featured a new course and considerable improvements to runner safety. The new course took runners out into the farm areas beyond the University and runners got some great views and scenery but paid the price with some new hills. Striders Abi Griffin took out the female marathon title (3:32) and club president Stan Fetting won his second marathon title in Toowoomba (2:57). There were a host of other notable achievements as well: Continue reading “Striders Win Male And Female Marathon Titles In Toowoomba”

Race Day Nightmares – turning disaster into triumph
The old maxim that ‘times don’t win races, racers win races’ was proven again this week at the Olympics where we saw some high profile meltdowns. Emily Seebohm did the nation proud but felt she had failed in missing out on a gold medal, and James Magnussen didn’t fire as expected in the 4X100m freestyle relay final. Channel 9 helped make matters worse by conducting some train wreck interviews at a time when both athletes needed some space to process their emotions and thoughts so soon after the end of the race (and catch their breath). Most of us who race have had our dog days, when things just don’t go right, and many would have sympathised with James and Emily. Here’s my guide for ensuring that race day isn’t a disaster or at least learning from it: Continue reading “Race Day Nightmares – turning disaster into triumph”
Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge 2012
Ouch or Eina! Depending on your country of origin. I’d done this event in the previous two years with the first year being a 29 hour effort and only 3 of the 4 team members making it (a fail in other words and the t-shirt is for gardening only) and then last year being a 23 hour effort but with all 4 team members crossing the line. Super feeling. This year I had decided that it was unfair to commit to a team as a result of the uncertainty of life after the Comrades as I would have liked to have bettered the 23 hour and probably aimed for under 20 hours.
